In January 2022, Morocco switched on its largest desalination plant to date in Chtouka Ait Baha, according to the agriculture ministry. The 470 million US dollar plant was designed for 400,000 m³/day and was to supply the water-stressed Agadir area and farms to its south. Nearly 15,000 hectares were to be irrigated from the plant instead of scarce groundwater. The country planned further plants in Casablanca, Sidi Ifni, Dakhla, Safi and Nador.
The report showed that desalination in Morocco was meant not only to supply cities but also to replace groundwater in farming, and that the country was already preparing further sites.
