In October 2018, Utility Magazine reported on the Myalup-Wellington project in Western Australia, led by Collie Water. Salty water from the East Branch of the Collie River was to be pumped out so less salt reached Wellington Dam. A privately owned desalination plant near Collie would then treat it into about 10 gigalitres of potable water a year for Harris Dam. The scheme cost $396 million, funded with $190 million federal, $37 million state and $169 million private money. Tendering for the plant had started.
The report showed desalination in Australia also being used inland against rising salinity in reservoirs, combined with expanded irrigation for regional agriculture and drinking water supply.
