In October 2024, Al-Monitor carried an AFP report on mobile desalination units in Morocco. Since 2023, about 44 of these compact monobloc stations had been set up, and the kingdom had pledged a further 219 desalination stations. In the fishing village of Beddouza, some 180 km northwest of Marrakesh, three units gave around 45,000 people drinking water. According to local water official Yassine Maliari, one station could produce up to 3,600 m³/day, with tanker trucks taking the water to remote areas.
The report showed how Morocco, in its worst drought in almost 40 years, used small mobile plants as a quick supplement to large desalination plants such as the one in Safi.
