In November 2024, Arab News Pakistan reported that companies from the United Arab Emirates had signalled interest in funding a desalination plant for Karachi, Pakistan's main port city. The office of Murad Ali Shah, chief minister of Sindh province, said so after he met Bakhit Atiq Al Rimithiki, the UAE Consul General, for the Emirates' National Day. Talks also covered transport as well as road and bridge projects. Shah planned to bring the province's investment department together with UAE officials.
The report showed that desalination for Karachi formed part of broader investment talks with the Emirates. It named no capacity, site or operator for a plant.
