In September 2019, the Fiji Sun reported that Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama had toured the Sydney desalination plant during his state visit to Australia. The visit was meant to help Fiji's government set up its own plants, above all in the Lau Group and Yasawa islands. The government planned funding for island desalination, new treatment plants, storage and pipe networks, groundwater and rainwater use. Desalination plants were to run on renewable energy.
The report showed how Fiji used a large plant in a neighbouring country as a model; desalination there formed part of a broad, climate-resilience-oriented water programme alongside rainwater and groundwater.
