In March 2018, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported that West Basin Municipal Water District in California had released a draft environmental impact report (EIR) for seawater desalination. The US$380 million plant would produce 76,000 m³/day, expandable to 227,000 m³/day, at El Segundo Generating Station, bordering Manhattan Beach. It was to meet 11 per cent of the district's demand. Public meetings were set for 25 April and 12 May 2018, with written comments due by 25 May 2018.
The report showed an early permitting stage for the first large seawater desalination plant in Los Angeles County, with open questions on intakes, brine, energy use and siting.
