In February 2013, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported that West Basin Municipal Water District planned to rent out its seawater desalination demonstration plant in Redondo Beach, California, as its own testing programme was drawing to a close. Manufacturers and researchers could use the installed ultrafiltration and two-stage reverse osmosis trains or run their own equipment on raw or pretreated seawater. The plant handled up to 19 litres per second. West Basin invited letters of intent for trials through to the end of 2014.
The report showed a Californian utility trying to keep its pilot plant in use after its own trials, offering it as a test bed for pretreatment, membranes and energy recovery.
