In March 2018, The Log reported on several environmental bills filed in the California legislature in Sacramento in mid-February. One of them, Assembly Bill 3056 (AB 3056), aimed to launch a statewide desalination policy. It built on California's Cobey-Porter Saline Water Conservation Law, which obliges the state to develop economical water technologies. According to the bill text, desalination had become technically viable for producing large new volumes from seawater, brackish water and recycled water. At this stage the bill only stated an intent to pass later desalination laws.
The report showed that desalination had reached California's legislative agenda in 2018, initially as a declaration of intent without concrete projects, volumes or funding.
