Price gap over private desalination plants, Egypt

In March 2018, Daily News Egypt reported that Egypt's government was in talks with Seven Seas Water and Schneider Electric over seawater desalination plants. Khaled Kamel of Schneider Electric's Egypt office said the plants would be built in phases, the first with 300 m³/day. Seven Seas Water was to arrange financing and sell the water to the state over 20 years. The company offered EGP 17 per m³, while the government would pay no more than EGP 5. Possible locations were South Sinai or the North Coast.

The report showed how far apart offer and target prices for privately financed desalination in Egypt were in 2018: the asking price was more than three times the state's ceiling.
