The Antofagasta regional council has approved CLP 418 million for a study of how brine discharge and seawater intake affect the coast. The marine sciences faculty of the Universidad de Antofagasta will carry it out over 24 months. It covers San Jorge Bay, where two of the country's largest desalination plants operate. According to the region, 70 % of Chile's desalination industry is located there. The results are to feed into the regional climate plan.

Here the public sector measures for itself what the plants return to the sea. The findings concern the region where Chile desalinates most.
