In June 2022, Daily News Egypt reported on an inspection tour by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to the newly built city of Al-Alamein, focused mainly on utility networks. Wael Samir, head of the authority for the new city, said a seawater desalination plant of 150,000 m³/day had been built and was running. A storage facility for desalinated water was 76 percent complete. Housing Minister Assem Al-Jazzar listed desalination plants within the first of the city's three investment areas.
The report showed that seawater desalination formed part of the basic equipment of Egypt's new cities, planned alongside power, gas and sewage within the same utility infrastructure.
