In September 2018, Egypt Today reported that President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi toured the city of Galala, then under construction on the Red Sea between Ain Sokhna and Zafarana. According to presidential spokesman Bassam Radi, the visit included the city's 150,000 m³/day desalination plant. Galala covered 17,500 acres at 700 metres altitude, with more than 55 investing companies and 80,000 people at work. The armed forces' engineering authority oversaw the scheme among more than 253 national projects.

The report showed that Egypt's new Red Sea city projects included their own desalination on the scale of 150,000 m³/day, presented as part of a large state development programme.
