In December 2024, ENR reported that state water company Acuamed had awarded a 93.9 million US dollar contract for the Torrevieja desalination plant during the summer. A joint venture of Sacyr Water, Sacyr Construction, Cadagua and Ferrovial Construction is to raise capacity from 80 to 120 million m³ per year and operate the plant for four years. The scope includes a hall of about 5,000 m² for new osmosis units and two additional seawater intakes. The water serves irrigation and as many as 1.6 million residents.
The report showed Spain relying on the expansion of existing large plants in its dry southeast. With Torrevieja and Águilas, two expansions went to partnerships of Sacyr and Ferrovial in 2024.
