Huntington Beach, 2017: No buyer for Poseidon's desalinated water

No buyer for Poseidon's desalinated water, Huntington Beach

In February 2017, OC Weekly reported new hurdles for Poseidon's proposed seawater desalination plant in Huntington Beach. In early February, the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) declined to adopt a resolution to help sell Poseidon's water; General Manager Robert Hunter stressed that this was not a vote against it. Poseidon thus still had no buyer. A reliability study projected only 6,500 acre-feet of new demand by 2040 (about 8 million m³), while the plant was to supply nearly 56,000 acre-feet per year (about 69 million m³).

The report showed that large desalination projects depended not only on permits but also on secured offtakers and robust demand forecasts.
