Spanish loan for two desalination plants, Morocco

In November 2020, Morocco was set to receive a loan of more than 5.9 million US dollars from Spain to build two desalination plants. The sites were Assa Zag in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region and Moulay Brahim in Al Haouz Province. Spain's Council of Ministers approved the credit on 3 November. It was to be granted by the Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO) through its FIEM fund to Morocco's National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE).

The report showed Spain promoting desalination as an export field for its water industry. For Morocco, the project fitted a policy line that, according to the report, went back to the 1973 national drinking water master plan.
