Sindh plans two desalination plants, Karachi

In August 2022, the government of Pakistan's Sindh province decided to build two seawater desalination plants on the Karachi coast, each supplying five million gallons per day (MGD). Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chose Ibrahim Hyderi in Korangi Creek as a site, while another plant was to serve the old area of Lyari. The Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) had proposed three locations. Sindh also sought to take over a 1.2 MGD plant built by a private firm for the KANUPP nuclear power plant.

The report showed the scale of the gap: the two plants, with ten million gallons per day combined, set against a reported shortfall of around 535 million gallons per day.
