In February 2019, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) announced it would seek partners that year to build Dubai's first solar-powered desalination plant. As Gulf News reported, citing Bloomberg, the reverse osmosis plant was to produce up to 120 million gallons of drinking water a day by 2024. Dewa chief executive Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer outlined the plans at the World Government Summit in Dubai. Dewa was also developing a reservoir for up to six billion gallons, against about 700 million gallons stored at the time.
The report showed Dubai aiming to decouple growth in water supply from burning fossil fuels, treating desalination, solar power and water storage as one connected plan.
