In November 2020, PROCESS Worldwide reported, based on an announcement by Toray, on two membrane orders in the Gulf. Toray Industries was to supply reverse osmosis membranes for the Al Dur 2 plant in Bahrain and the Umm Al Quwain plant in the United Arab Emirates. Together the two were designed for 911,000 m³/day, Umm Al Quwain alone for 681,000 m³/day. Supply and technical services were assigned to the subsidiary Toray Membrane Middle East in Dammam. Sidem Veolia was the EPC contractor, with operation expected in 2022.

The report showed how membrane makers served the Gulf through local subsidiaries, and it named Umm Al Quwain as a plant whose capacity ranked among the largest in the world.
