In August 2024, VA Tech WABAG won a repeat order worth Rs 415 crore from Chennai's water board (CMWSSB). As the company announced, it covered operation and maintenance of the 110,000 m³ per day Nemmeli seawater reverse osmosis plant for seven years. The previous operating contract had ended in 2021, and the board had issued a new tender. According to the company, the plant, inaugurated in 2013, was India's first municipal desalination plant built on a design, build, operate basis. It supplied southern Chennai.

The report showed that operating contracts for desalination plants had become a business of their own, giving suppliers predictable long-term revenue over many years.
