In September 2016, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported the opening of a combined adsorption desalination and cooling plant in Solar Village near Riyadh. Described as the world's biggest adsorption chiller installation, it delivered 100 m³/day of desalinated water using 1.2 kWh of power per cubic metre. King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) developed the system and shared ownership with the National University of Singapore. Taqnia and start-up Medad Technologies took part; Polish firm Net handled engineering, fabrication and installation.

The report showed research bodies from Saudi Arabia and Singapore bringing a process that combined desalination and cooling in one unit into operation at small scale.
