In October 2015, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported that STW Water Process and Technologies had started work on a newly leased brackish water resource near Imperial, Texas. The artesian water came from the San Andres formation roughly 600 m deep, where several of eight wells had each delivered 4,000 to 10,000 m³/day for over 40 years. STW planned to treat it with its own hybrid reverse osmosis for industry and towns, with first sales in early 2016 and the full West Texas Water Project running by mid-2018.
The report showed how previously unused brackish water from deep aquifers in the US Southwest was being targeted as a new source of drinking and industrial water.
