China, 2016: GE to supply zero liquid discharge at Zhuozhou power plant

Zero liquid discharge for coal power plant, Zhuozhou

In August 2016, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported that GE had won an order to treat wastewater at the new Zhuozhou Jingyuan coal-fired power station in Hebei province, 60 kilometres south of Beijing. Due to open in May 2017, it would treat flue gas desulphurisation effluent without liquid discharge, reusing about 99 percent. GE supplied membranes, brine concentration and crystallisation, yielding pure sodium chloride. New Chinese thermal plants were by then required to avoid liquid discharge. The station replaced the Shijingshan plant, shut in March 2015.

The report showed how tighter environmental rules in China carried membrane and brine technology from desalination into the power sector.
