In November 2016, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported that Hitachi had been picked to demonstrate RemixWater in South Africa, a system combining seawater desalination with water reuse. eThekwini Municipality, which covers Durban, and Japan's NEDO agency signed a memorandum of understanding on 17 November 2016. The 6,250 m³/day unit was to sit at an existing sewage works, running four years until November 2020. Blending reuse RO concentrate with seawater was meant to lower pumping pressure by about 40 percent and keep discharged brine near 3.5 percent salt.
The report showed how desalination and reuse were being merged into a single system around 2016 to cut both energy demand and the salt load of brine.
