In June 2017, The Hindu BusinessLine reported that the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) planned to pass its own water purification devices and desalination processes on to companies. On 23 June, a first one-day business meeting on the subject took place in Coimbatore, organised by BARC with the EDII (Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute). According to BARC scientist J. Daniel Chellappa, the agenda covered manufacturing guidelines and routes for technology transfer. Ministry data put the number of people exposed to contaminants such as fluoride and arsenic at over 46 million.

The report showed an Indian research centre seeking to spread its desalination and treatment technology through private partners, against a background of widespread drinking water contamination.
