In August 2017, WaterWorld reported that Saudi Arabia's Saline Water Conversion Company (SWCC) had appointed Pöyry as owner's engineer for the Shoaiba 4 desalination project. Pöyry was to check the contractor's design work and monitor construction, installation and start-up. In April, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction had won the 422 million US dollar contract for the 400,000 m³/day reverse osmosis plant. The project was first planned for Jeddah and later moved to a coastal site about 50 miles further south. The value of Pöyry's assignment was not disclosed.
The report showed that large SWCC reverse osmosis projects at the time awarded separate engineering mandates for supervision alongside the construction contract, relying on long-standing partners.
