In November 2017, PROCESS Worldwide reported that Solvay and Suez had secured a contract at Wanhua Chemical's industrial park in Yantai, Shandong Province. The park draws its water from a reverse osmosis plant. The new line was to handle 24,000 m³/day of desalination brine so that discharge to the sea met strict limits, including total nitrogen below 15 mg/l. It combined patented Suez processes with an oxidation step the two firms had developed together. Start-up was planned for October 2018.
The report showed how tighter environmental rules in China were turning the treatment of desalination brine into a business of its own, separate from producing the water itself.
