In December 2017, The Costa Rica News reported on a desalination plant at the Conchal reserve near Santa Cruz in Guanacaste. Florida Ice & Farm (Fifco) paid for it after repeated droughts hit the coast. The plant used reverse osmosis and, with four modules, was to deliver 23 litres of drinking water per second, close to 2,000 m³/day. Seawater was drawn 230 metres off the beach at a depth of six metres. Design and construction had started in 2014.
The report showed a private company in Costa Rica turning to seawater desalination as a response to drought on the Guanacaste coast, backed by studies on intake and brine discharge.
