In May 2019, BetaKit reported that Vancouver-based Mangrove Water Technologies had received $2.1 million from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), a federal funding programme. The company was developing a process to turn saline wastewater and waste gases from oil and gas operations into desalinated water and chemicals on site. Spun out of the University of British Columbia in 2017, the firm planned field trials with Canadian Natural Resources at a mining site in Alberta.
The report showed desalination being funded as a building block of industrial wastewater treatment. The aim here was to recover saline residues as products instead of discharging them.
