In July 2019, the Oman Observer reported from the 2018 annual report of the Public Authority for Water (Diam) that 78.6 million m³ of drinking water had remained unaccounted for. This equalled 21.6 percent of output, down from 24.3 percent in 2017 and 43.4 percent in 2010. Of roughly 364 million m³ produced, about 315 million m³ came from desalination plants and 49.4 million m³ from wellfields. Leak detection, pressure control and renewed pipes together saved around 38 million m³.
The report showed that in a country desalinating most of its drinking water, every cubic metre lost to leaks was costly water, which made network upkeep part of supply strategy.
