In July 2019, The Times of India reported that Tamil Nadu's power minister P Thangamani had told the state assembly of plans for a desalination plant in north Chennai serving only the thermal power units of the utility Tangedco. It was to produce 10,000 m³/day for Rs 200 crore, and a project report was in preparation. The two 600 MW units had so far drawn water from a Metrowater plant. With new power projects, demand could reach 20,000 m³/day.
The report showed that in Chennai, power generation was now planning its own desalination capacity alongside municipal supply, freeing water from existing plants for other users.
