In July 2019, The New Indian Express reported that Chennai was about to supply treated sewage to industry. The Kodungaiyur plant was due for completion in early August, a second one at Koyambedu in September. Using reverse osmosis as a third treatment stage, both together were to handle 90,000 m³/day, rising to 120,000 m³/day by July 2020. Until then, firms in the north of the city had received 40,000 m³ of fresh water daily, partly from the Minjur desalination plant; the saved water was to go to households.
The report showed that besides seawater desalination, Chennai was applying membrane technology to sewage as well, to keep drinking water reserved for households.
