In October 2019, the Oman Observer reported that the Suhar-4 seawater desalination plant at Sohar Port had entered full operation. The reverse osmosis facility produces about 250,000 m³/day and was built for roughly 220 million US dollars. Lead investor Sacyr holds 51 percent of the consortium through Sacyr Agua, with Oman Brunei Investment Company and Sogex Oman holding the remainder. Oman Power and Water Procurement Company buys the output for 20 years. Sacyr put the number of people served at around 220,000.
The report showed how Oman relied on a small number of large desalination hubs for drinking water: after Barka IV with 281,000 m³/day, Suhar-4 was the country's second largest independent water project.
