In July 2018, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported on VietnamPlus that Doosan Heavy Industries Vietnam (Doosan Vina) had loaded an initial 566-tonne consignment of desalination components at Dung Quat port on 19 July. The cargo was bound for the Shoaiba 4 reverse osmosis plant in Saudi Arabia, a US$430 million contract with the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC). In total, Doosan Vina and other Doosan units were to make about 1,727 tonnes, sent in three further consignments through December. The plant was to supply 400,000 m³/day to Jeddah.
The report showed how large Gulf desalination contracts stretched supply chains into Southeast Asia, with Korean plant builders drawing on their Vietnamese manufacturing sites to deliver major components.
