In July 2020, The Straits Times reported that Singapore's fourth desalination facility, Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant, had entered commercial service. It produces some 30 million gallons of drinking water daily, around 7 per cent of national demand. In dry spells it treats seawater; after rain it draws on Marina Reservoir instead. With its treatment units underground, the roof offers almost 20,000 m² of green space. Keppel Infrastructure unit Marina East Water runs it under a 25-year concession to 2045.
The report showed Singapore's approach of expanding desalination as one of its four national water sources and fitting plants compactly into the city; treating both seawater and rainwater in one plant was new.
