In November 2020, Construction Review reported that a solar-powered desalination unit had started operating at the Philip Quaque School in Cape Coast after two years of research and development. Grino Water Solutions developed it, while Safeflex way water technologies built a borehole yielding about 8 m³/day. Twenty-four solar panels from Energiebau Sunergy supplied power, and the unit produced around 3,000 litres of drinking water daily. The Innovation und Zukunft Stiftung funded the project, which was to serve about 600 students and 400 residents.
The report showed how small solar-powered desalination at a borehole was meant to improve drinking water for schools and nearby communities, with partial water sales covering maintenance.
