In January 2021, Patch reported that the Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD), based in Perris, had announced 25 million US dollars in federal money spread over several years for its desalination programme. The funds came under the Water Resources Development Act and were to be handed out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The district treated salty groundwater and recovered about 75 gallons of drinking water from every 100 pumped. New technology was meant to lift this to 90 gallons, with wells and pipelines also covered.
The report showed that groundwater desalination in inland Southern California was seen as a way to cut water imports, and that recovery per volume pumped had become the key technical figure.
