In January 2021, the Oman Observer reported that Dhofar Governorate's first independent water project (IWP) was about to start commercial operation. The reverse osmosis plant near Mirbat, outside Salalah, was designed for 113,650 m³/day and represented an investment of 160 million US dollars. Dhofar Desalination Company, led by ACWA Power, owned it together with Veolia Middle East and DIDIC. A consortium of Fisia Italimpianti and Abengoa Agua built the plant. Three of its five reverse osmosis units were already producing water.
The report showed that Oman secured water supply in Dhofar through a privately financed desalination project backed by a 20-year offtake agreement with the state buyer OPWP.
