In January 2021, The Korea Herald, carrying a Yonhap report, said that Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction had won a contract worth 780 billion won, about 707.8 million US dollars, for the Yanbu 4 seawater desalination plant. The client was a consortium of Engie and the Saudi firms Mowah and Nesma. The plant was to rise in Alrayyis, about 260 km north of Jeddah, deliver 450,000 m³/day and be finished in 2023. Since 2016, Doosan had won desalination work in Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
The report showed that South Korean plant builders were in demand in the Middle East as construction partners for developer consortia behind large desalination plants, and intended to expand further in this market.
