In February 2021, Mothership reported that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had formally opened the Marina East Desalination Plant, Singapore's fourth, on 4 February. It delivered up to 30 million gallons of drinking water daily (about 136,000 m³/d), around 7 per cent of national demand, and was the first plant able to treat both seawater and water from Marina Reservoir. Its treatment units sat below ground beneath a green roof open to visitors. Lee thanked Keppel, the water agency PUB and the construction teams for finishing on schedule despite Covid-19.
The report showed Singapore treating desalination as part of long-term water planning: Lee pointed to climate change and to the rising difficulty and expense of securing every extra drop.
