In February 2021, Middle East Construction News reported that the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) had invited developers and consortia to express interest in the Mirfa 2 independent water project. The reverse osmosis plant was to supply up to 150 million imperial gallons daily (about 682,000 m³/d) and be built next to the Mirfa IWPP, some 110 km west of the capital. The developer would hold up to 40 per cent of the project company. Submissions closed on 4 March 2021, with commercial operation targeted for Q1 2024.
The report showed EWEC pursuing a split between power and water generation, relying on standalone reverse osmosis plants to cut gas use and costs.
