In April 2021, Middle East Construction News reported that over 70 percent of the work on a large desalination plant in Umm Al Quwain was done. The project cost USD 598 million and covered 250,000 m². Energy minister Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei toured the site with FEWA director-general Mohammed Mohammed Saleh. Phase one was due to reach 50 million gallons a day (about 227,000 m³/d) in the fourth quarter of 2021. Four supply networks were planned for Al Khuraija in Ras Al Khaimah, Al Burairat and Umm Al Quwain.

The report showed a federal project whose water was to be distributed through four separate networks beyond Umm Al Quwain itself, as far as Ras Al Khaimah.
