In September 2021, Globes reported that Mekorot had begun enlarging the Sabha desalination plant north of Eilat on the Red Sea. It had supplied 18 million m³ a year, mainly to Eilat, nearby communities, tourism, and industry and farming in the southern Arava. Output was to rise by over 50% to as much as 30 million m³ annually. Including new water pipelines, the project was budgeted at about NIS 500 million. It had been approved as a national infrastructure plan in January 2021, with completion expected within five years.

The report showed that, alongside its large Mediterranean plants, Israel was also expanding desalinated supply for outlying regions. For Eilat on the Red Sea, the expansion ranked among Mekorot's largest projects for the years ahead.
