In November 2024, the Government of Dubai Media Office announced that DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) produced a record of about 184 million m³ of desalinated water between July and September 2024, 4.64% more than a year earlier. Peak demand reached about 2.07 million m³/d, up 4.92%. By 2030, DEWA plans to lift desalination capacity from about 2.25 to 3.34 million m³/d. New plants rely on reverse osmosis, which needs less power than thermal flash distillation.
The report showed how strongly demand in a fast-growing emirate drove desalination output. At the same time, expansion was shifting from thermal processes towards more energy-efficient reverse osmosis.
