In December 2024, the Free Press Journal reported that the municipal corporation BMC had scrapped its tender for a desalination plant at Manori in Malad. Despite several deadline extensions, no bidder came forward for the plant of about 200,000 m³/d, expandable to about 400,000 m³/d. Instead, the Colaba sewage treatment plant was to be upgraded to supply about 15,000 m³/d of recycled water fit for drinking. The tender for this pilot was planned for January 2025.
The report showed that a large desalination project could stall for lack of interested bidders. Mumbai then turned to treating sewage to drinking water standard as an alternative source.
