In April 2020, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) announced its 2019 Annual Technical Report on water, wastewater and electricity. According to the report, the emirate had nine major desalination plants in 2018 with a combined gross capacity of 4.36 million m³/day. They produced 1,214 million m³ that year, an average of 3.33 million m³/day. Thermal processes supplied 85 percent of the water and reverse osmosis 15 percent. Peak demand reached 3.76 million m³/day. In 57,249 water tests, compliance with prescribed values was 99.91 percent.
The report showed how heavily Abu Dhabi relied on thermal desalination and how the regulator published capacity, output and water quality of the plants in a public report.
