In February 2023, Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) awarded the development of the Mirfa 2 Reverse Osmosis desalination plant to a consortium of Taqa and France's Engie, TradeArabia reported, citing a statement. The plant was to produce up to 550,000 m³/day of drinking water and be fully operational in the third quarter of 2025. Taqa was to hold 60 per cent and Engie 40 per cent, with Taqa also holding a stake in the operator. EWEC expected over 90 per cent of water to come from reverse osmosis by 2030.

The award marked Abu Dhabi's shift from thermal desalination to membrane technology, which EWEC linked to falling emissions: from 14.6 million tonnes in 2020 to 2.1 million tonnes by 2030.
