In November 2024, Revista Nueva Minería & Energía reported that the first reputation analysis of the water industry and desalination in Chile was to be presented at the 2024 congress of Aladyr, the Latin American desalination and water reuse association. It was prepared by PuntoCero Consultores and Monitor Social, analysing influential news, videos and Google searches from 2022 to 2024. The water industry was highly visible but rated below agriculture, energy, forestry and mining, ahead only of fishing. Desalination showed average visibility and favourability, with predominantly negative sentiment.
The study showed that in Chile public perception had become an issue for desalination alongside technology and cost; Nicolás Ibieta of PuntoCero cited its close link to mining as a possible reason.
