In December 2021, Egypt Independent reported that a large desalination plant costing US$97 million was being built in North Sinai Governorate, around 17 kilometres west of al-Arish. According to Secretary General Osama al-Ghandour, it was to deliver 100,000 m³/day in a first phase and 300,000 m³/day in a second. Officials were preparing its connection to the main pipelines to serve Arish, Rafah, Sheikh Zuweid and central Sinai and to replace the existing pump system.

The report showed Egypt moving to supply North Sinai through desalination instead of pumped water. The two-phase plan tripled capacity and targeted the entire governorate.
