In November 2021, Pakistan Today reported that the Balochistan government planned several water projects for the coastal town of Gwadar as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Pakistan's Central Development Working Party (CDWP) had approved the PC-I planning document for reverse osmosis plants totalling about 22,700 m³/d to treat seawater. The master plan also included a distribution network, sewerage and a treatment plant, and the pipeline from Swad Dam to Gwadar was almost complete.
The report showed Gwadar relying on seawater desalination alongside dams and pipelines under CPEC. The approval covered the planning stage only and said nothing yet about construction or operation.
