In November 2021, Middle East Construction News reported, citing a statement from Khatib & Alami, that the Mheila reverse osmosis plant on the Shatt al-Arab in Basra Governorate had been finished. It delivered 72,000 m³/day and could handle raw water with salinity between 2,000 and 30,000 mg/l, since tides, low river levels and sewage made the river's quality swing widely. Kalite Holdings and Al-Dayer United built it, EAB Design & Consulting Engineering and Malachy Walsh & Partners designed it, and Khatib & Alami reviewed the design.
The report showed how reverse osmosis was meant to make river water with shifting salinity usable in southern Iraq. The plant formed part of a strategy of 16 large projects totalling 1 million m³/day.
